Notes on how to use the diagnostic questionnaire

The present questionnaire was developed by us to be used for making a presumptive diagnosis. It is quite short and has a clear structure. We followed the diagnostic criteria mentioned in the DSM-IV but converted them into questions. There are currently two versions. In one version, the crucial points are highlighted in colour so as to allow an evaluation by one’s self. However, it is useful to fill out the „neutral“ questionnaire first in order to give unbiased answers. An evaluation can then be made with the coloured questionnaire.

In the section „social interaction“, the crucial parts are marked in red. On the right-hand side, there are the letters a, b and c. Section a covers three questions (down to where there is the letter b). Section b covers four questions, so does section c.

Thus, in Social Interaction a total score of 3 can be reached. This means that, if one of the answers in section a is in the highlighted part, then the score is 1. It is the same with sections b and c.

The more answers there are in the coloured parts, the clearer the tendency towards a possible diagnosis with autism. If in Social Interaction the total score is less than 2, a diagnosis with autism cannot be taken into consideration.

The evaluation for sections Communication and Behaviour works just the same way. However, in these latter two sections, only 1 point per section is necessary for a presumptive diagnosis. In total, the score must be at least 6. The higher the score, the more likely a diagnosis with autism can be taken into consideration.

Please, also pay attention to the notes given on the information sheet you receive together with the questionnaire. If you have any further questions, please, contact us by e-mail!
